Co-hosted by the SCRCA and its Foundation, the May 1 race was the first of its kind since 2017, as unsafe water levels led to the cancellation of the 2018 and 2019 editions, while COVID-19 annulled the springtime races in 2020 and 2021.
This year the race –typically held in April – was pushed back to May in hopes that water levels would co-operate with racers.
Race co-ordinator and conservation education co-ordinator Melissa Levi said everyone involved was thrilled that after four years the race was back on.

“We are so happy that the event could go forward this year,” Levi said. “It was a great day, and I think everyone enjoyed getting out on the water.”
Each year, the canoe and kayak race serves as a fundraiser for the SCRCA’s conservation education programs. This year, participants raised $5,000, with Emery Huszka and Jerry Fiddler winning the top fundraiser award.
This year’s race featured 11 different race classes and three different race lengths.
