Two people on an inflatable kayak were plucked to safety after getting into difficulties off Anglesey. The rescue, by a RNLI Moelfre crew, came just four days after a man died in the sea on the other side of the island.

HM Coastguard was alerted by a concerned beach walker who had seen two adults struggling to make headway in a strong offshore wind near Traeth Lligwy, near Moelfre. When retrieved, both were said to be “cold and shocked” by their experience.

RNLI Moelfre’s inshore lifeboat Enfys 2 was sent to the scene at 12.49pm yesterday (May 10). A Coastguard search and rescue team from Cemaes Bay was also dispatched but it was stood down en route.

Both adults were taken on board Enfys 2. A spokesperson said: “To avoid any hazards to navigation, or further call-outs for the kayak itself, it too was brought on board.”

A quick assessment of the pair showed that, despite suffering from shock, they did not need immediate medical assistance. Both casualties were given “sea safety advice” by the lifeboat crew.

Back on shore, they were taken to the Moelfre Coastguard vehicle to warm up and receive some minor medical treatment. The pair were also given another round of advice.

RNLI supporters praised the teams’ actions and questioned the wisdom of venturing out to sea in an inflatable kayak when an strong offshore wind was blowing. “Lives saved, me thinks,” said one person on Facebook.

Another agreed: “What where they thinking, day like today?” he said. “Send them the bill.”

Last Friday (May 6), a 35-year-old man died after he got into difficulty while “coasteering” off Anglesey. North Wales Police (NWP) are investigating after the man, who was not from the area, died during a planned activity in Rhoscolyn. You can read more about this incident here.
